The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society is primarily focused on:

  • Enhancing and conserving local salmon populations, particularly chinook and coho
  • Operating a hatchery to raise and release salmon fry and smolts
  • Maintaining summer water flows in Demamiel Creek for coho and trout survival
  • Capturing broodstock and collecting eggs for salmon enhancement
  • Rearing and releasing millions of salmon annually
  • Supporting the “Fish in the Classroom” program for local schools
  • Monitoring and maintaining salmon populations in local rivers and creeks
  • Collaborating with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for salmon conservation
  • Operating a sea pen program to raise smolts from the Nitinat River Hatchery

Importantly, without the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society, Sooke would not have had salmon in its rivers for decades. Their efforts have been crucial in reviving and maintaining the local salmon populations, supporting both the ecosystem and the local economy.
